| A British rock group that consisted of Ringo Starr, George Harrison, Paul McCartney and John Lennon, The Beatles were from Liverpool. They went on to become one of the most successful bands in the history of music. They have to their credit over 40 albums and single numbers that reached the top of the charts and were rated at the number one position in the United Kingdom. They had the same kind of success in several other countries and EMI which was their record company, went on to sell more than a million tapes and discs all over the world. The Recording Industry Association of America has claimed that The Beatles continue to be the highest selling musical group in the United States, of all time.
The Beatles were ranked as the number one group, amongst a list of a hundred Great Artists of All Time, in a Rolling Stone publication in 2004. The same magazine went on to say that their music was innovative and had made a marked cultural influence on the tradition of pop music in the 1960s.
In the 1960s The Beatles led a British musical invasion in the United States. The early music of the Beatles was based on the popular Rock and Roll style, but they moved on to new genres with Psychedelic Rock and Tin Pan Alley. They had a unique style both in music and appearance which quickly made them trend setters. |
